Other Music

May 10th, 2010

So, if you haven’t noticed, I’m a very music oriented type of person. I play in bands, listen to tons of music, and even work in a musical instrument shop. I wanted to share a little more of the music I’ve been utilizing to get me through writing papers, and even the story I’ve been working on this semester. I don’t like to hear too much singing while I’m writing, so I listen to a lot of post rock. Here is the main band I’ve been rocking while writing:

The album I’ve been mostly listening to is called The Fall of Math. Another band I’ve been listening to a lot is called American Steel. They’re what is called an orgcore band. Basically, it’s along the lines of the Lawrence Arms or older Alkaline Trio. I like to listen to that stuff when I’m working on other things or writing different sorts of stuff. They’ve got some really neat lyrics. Another band in that same realm that I reccomend is called Small Arms Dealer, and specifically their album called Patron Saint Of Disappointment. That album is killer.

Another type of music that has a totally different feel that I love is metal, and specifically death metal. I know there are a couple guys that rock this sort of music out there, so I’ll name a couple bands that I have had on heavy rotation lately.

The first is Spawn of Possession. They’re a technical death metal band out of Sweden that really pioneered the genre that bands like the Faceless have been banking on. Another band I would really reccomend taking a listen to is Nile. I know if you’re into death metal, you probably listen to those gods of the genre, but their new album is something that I rock a lot.

There is some inspiration for 90% of you. Check out those bands if you’re looking for something new to listen to. Rock.

Alt. Country Galore

May 10th, 2010

So, I know some of you have been talking about country and folk music and I just thought you may be interested in some other stuff out there. I’m sure most of you (that are into that stuff) listen to Iron and Wine. He really writes some cool stuff. My eighth grade math teacher has a fun band that is based out of Chicago:

I’m sure most of you are familiar with the punk band Bad Religion, as the lead singer’s dad is a professor at UWP. Greg Graffin actually writes folky music:

It’s pretty freakin’ rad. Anywho, the first part of this next track is black metal but the second part is really cool instrumental blue grassy/folky:

That’s by a really cool guy from the Kentucky area I met about six months ago. If you’re into the black metal aspects of that, check this site out:

That’s a different story. Anywho, I just thought that stuff might inspire you guys n’ gals that are into that sort of music. Rock.

Banjos and Stuff

April 20th, 2010

Hey, I finally got around to getting on here.  This is the song that I originally posted lyrics from in my story:

I really get inspired from music like this.  I mostly play in death metal and hardcore bands, but I’m really into country music.  If more people around here were into that sort of thing, I would cease my metal stuff and just play country.  I’m extremely into this band:

Every CD that they put out is amazing.  Other bands that I appreciate in that same realm include the Old 97’s and all of the projects that spawned around that band, Wilco, the Weakerthans, Centr0-matic….I could go on and on.  The dirtier and blues-ier it gets, the more I’m into it.  If you’re into local music, there is one pretty good country band:

There’s some stuff to check out for the one or two other people into country/folk music.  Rock.

Oh, the Horror!

February 17th, 2010

Hello!  I’m a long time reader, first time poster.  We discussed some really neat stories yesterday.  The term psychological horror was tossed around a bit, which is a genre of movie I have been getting into over the past few months.  My favorite movie of the genre is a film that came out in 2009 entitled Martyrs.  It’s a French film that explores the idea of martyrdom.  If you have not seen the film, I reccomend you rent it now.  It’s scary, thought-provoking, and executed extremely well.

I wish I could pull something off like that.  As a musician, it’s easy for me to write any type or genre, but writing comes hard for me.  I’m taking this class and a poetry class to try to help with that aspect of my life.  Does anyone have any tips for someone trying to write horror?  I know some of you guys and gals are into that…

I believe I attached a picture of the movie poster.  If you want more information about the film, feel free to contact me.  Thanks!
